Nord-Trøndelag: Four out of five tractors older than 10 years

The final figures from the 1999 Census of Agriculture show that four out of five tractors in county of Nord-Trøndelag were older than 10 years. In 1989 about three out of five tractors were older than 10 years. In 1999 there were 10 700 tractors at holdings operating at least 5 decares of agricultural area.

The number of tractors has decreased in Nord-Trøndelag since 1989. Then there were 12 000 tractors, while the corresponding number in 1999 was 10 700. The main reason to the fall is mostly connected to the fall in the number of active holdings. The average number of tractors was 1.9 per holding in 1989 and 2.1 ten years later.

The tractors are growing bigger and stronger. I 1999 every second tractor had four wheel drive. In 1989 twice as many tractors had two-wheel drive compared with the number of tractors equipped with four wheel drive.

Fewer holdings and increased land rental

The number of holdings with agricultural land in use has fallen from 6 200 in 1989 to 5 000 in 1999, a reduction of 19 per cent. The agricultural land in use has increased with 40 000 decares to 885 000. The renting of land is growing in Nord-Trøndelag as in other counties, and the increase in the 10-year period was almost 50 per cent. Rented area was 194 000 decares in 1999, and represented 22 per cent of the total land in use. In 1989 rented land represented 15 per cent of the total land in use. Most of the rented land is under contracts of 5 years or more. In 1999 the total expenditures for land rental were 21.5 millions NOK, an average expenditure at 143 NOK per decare.

75 per cent of labour input conducted by the holders

In agriculture in Nord-Trøndelag the labour input corresponded to 7 000 full-time equivalents. At 1 200 holdings the labour input corresponded to one full-time equivalent or more. At 1 200 holdings the total labour input was less than half a full-time equivalent each. 3 300 of a total number of 8 900 holders and spouses/cohabitants, worked at least 1 500 man-hours on the holding. 4 300 of the holders worked 1 500 man-hours or more on the holding in 1989.

Holders and spouses/cohabitants conducted 75 per cent of the labour input themselves. Family members represented about 10 per cent. Temporarily and regularly hired help represented the remaining input.

Fire alarm system

Out of 3 700 holdings with livestock, about 550 or 15 per cent, had approved fire alarm system in one or more of the rooms with livestock. Holders in Nord-Trøndelag are in front compared with the average for the whole country at about 8 per cent.
