Telemark: Every second farm rents agricultural land

Final figures from the 1999 Census of Agriculture show that half of the holdings in the county of Telemark rent agricultural land from other farms. The number of holdings has fallen with 1 700 to 2 616 in 1999. This represents a decrease of almost 40 percent. The agricultural land remains almost unchanged.

2 000 full-time equivalents

In all, labour input corresponding to 2 000 full-time equivalents was employed on the holdings in Telemark. On 1 400 holdings the total labour input was less than half a full-time equivalent each, while about 700 holdings had labour inputs of one full-time equivalent or more. Of the 4 650 holders in all (including spouses and cohabitants) 700 worked at least 1 500 hours on their holding. The corresponding figure for 1989 was 1 200.

For the first time, labour input in so-called supplemental industries has been surveyed. Supplemental industries are activities that utilize a holdings land, buildings or machinery. Almost half of the holdings, or 1 224 units, engaged in supplemental industries to an extent equal to 170 full-time equivalents. It is machinery-related services that are the largest supplemental industry, with just about 600 holdings engaging in machinery-related services in 1998/1999.

Changes in fertiliser supply

Out of 1 800 holdings with fully cultivated meadow in 1999, 1 600 supplied artificial fertilisers. Compared with 1989 a higher amount of the holdings supply more nitrogen per decare. For phosphorous a higher number supply less fertilisers. The same results are shown for grain and oil-seed.
