Decrease in number of livestock holdings

In 2017, a total of 28 000 holdings kept livestock, which is 400 fewer than the year before according to new figures for Livestock husbandry

The number of cattle increased by 17 200 to a total of 865 400 from 2016 to 2017. The number of beef cows and cattle other than beef cows and dairy cows increased, while the number of dairy cows decreased. The number of dairy cows was reduced by 4 300 to 222 400. The number of beef cows increased by 6 200 to 82 400, and the number of cattle other than cows increased by 15 300 to 560 600.

From 2016 to 2017, the number of sheep increased by 3.1 per cent to a total of 1.1 million. About 14 500 holdings kept sheep, almost the same as the year before.

From 2016 to 2017, the number of breeding pigs dropped by 3.8 per cent to 89 100. In the same period, the number of pigs slaughtered increased by 2.5 per cent to 1 607 600.

At the start of 2017, 2 100 holdings kept 4.4 million laying hens. About 600 holdings kept broilers in 2017, and the number of broilers slaughtered the year before increased by 3.5 per cent from 2016 to 2017, to a total of 65.5 million in 2017.
