Stable number of beds

At year-end 2003 there were approximately 14 200 beds in somatic hospitals. On national level this is a marginal growth from 2002. The average length of stay is becoming shorter, but more patients are treated, both with regard to day treatments, out-patient consultations and overnight stays.

Some hospitals and health enterprises have gone through more extensive changes in the last few years. This is related to the Norwegian Hospital Reform, which was introduced in January 2002 and has led to further reorganisations in 2003.
