High growth in hospitals' expenses

The expenditures of general hospitals increased by nearly 12 per cent from 2000 to 2001. The gross current expenditures of psychiatric institutions increased by 6 per cent. The total amount of expenses within the specialist health service was NOK 47.5 billion.

The expenses of general hospitals constitute almost 80 per cent of the total expenses within the specialist health services. Hence, NOK 37.5 billion were used to operate the general hospitals in 2001, according to preliminary figures for gross current expenses.

Faster growth in the late 1990s

The average yearly increase in expenses was 7 per cent in the period 1990 - 2001. The expenses increased by 9 per cent on average in the period 1995 - 2001, compared with 4 per cent in the period 1990 - 1995.

Higher growth in psychiatric institutions for children and adolescents

The expenditures of psychiatric institutions amounted to NOK 9 billion in 2001, an increase of 6 per cent from 2000. The expenses of institutions for children and adolescents constituted 13 per cent of the total expenses in psychiatric institutions and had a higher growth than the institutions for adults. The expenses of institutions for children and adolescents grew by 9 per cent from 2000 to 2001, to a total of NOK 1.2 billion. The expenses of institutions for adults increased by 5 per cent to a total of NOK 7.8 billion.

Institutions within the specialist health services are somatic and psychiatric institutions like hospitals, outpatient clinics, training and rehabilitation institutions, after-care homes etc. Receiving these health services usually requires a referral from a physician in the primary health services, if not acute hospitalization.

All hospitals and other institutions that are formally owned by the counties have used the KOSTRA system in reporting their accounts. The KOSTRA figures were published on the 17.06.02. In the enclosed tables are also accounts for hospitals and other institutions not included in the KOSTRA system included. Included for the first time are accounts for training and rehabilitation institutions owned by the state or by private actors.

Parts of the figures for the specialist health services were reported close to the date of publishing. It has therefore not been possible to totally ensure the quality of these figures. In addition, for some areas data have not been reported. Final figures for the specialist health services will be published in week 38.
