The expenditures of institutions within the specialist health services increased by 7 per cent from 1999 to 2000. All together, the health institutions used NOK 42 billion in 2000. This is about NOK 9 400 per capita, an increase of almost NOK 600 from 1999.

Institutions within the specialist health services are somatic and psychiatric institutions like hospitals, outpatient clinics, training and rehabilitation institutions, after-care homes etc. Receiving these health services usually requires a referral from a physician in the primary health services, if not acute hospitalization.

Somatic institutions used about NOK 34 billion in 2000, an increase of NOK 2.2 billion from 1999. Most of these billions, 98 per cent, were used at somatic hospitals.

Psychiatric institutions used NOK 8.6 billion in 2000, which was almost 570 million more than in 1999. Expenses at psychiatric institutions for adults represented 87 per cent of these billion, although gross current expenses at psychiatric institutions for children and adolescents increased more than expenses at psychiatric institutions for adults. The increases where 9.4 and 6.7 per cent respectively from 1999 to 2000.
