More qualified personnel - more consultations

Almost 1 million out-patient consultations were carried out in psychiatric institutions in 2003, an increase of more than 17 per cent. The number of man-years continued to rise, from 17 923 in 2002 till 18 293 in 2003. However, the number of beds fell by 118 to 5 633.

More qualified personnel mean that there are more physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists and qualified nurses in psychiatric institutions. This partly explains the 17 per cent growth in out-patient consultations. The increase in consultations took place both in institutions for adults and in institutions for children and adolescents. The increase was 15 per cent for adults and 24 per cent for children and adolescents.
