County differences in specialist coverage

The differences between the counties on how many medical specialists, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists there are per 100 000 inhabitants are great. The extremes are Oslo with 61.1 man-years and Finnmark with 2.7.

Oslo has about twice as many contracted man-years as Akershus and Hordaland, which are closest in coverage. In addition to Finnmark, Møre and Romsdal, Troms and Nord-Trøndelag have low physician coverage per capita.

For psychiatrists and clinical psychologists Oslo has way better coverage then the other counties. The difference is not as large for other medical specialists.

After a decrease in number of contracted man-years from 1999 till 2000, there was an increase in 2001. During 2001 23 new agreements were entered into and 16.5 new man-years were contracted. Most of the increases occurred within psychiatry.

The number of agreements for clinical psychologists rose in 2001 as well when 13 new agreements were entered into. Sør-Trøndelag and Oslo increased the most.

Almost two out of three medical specialists received the highest class of subsidy. Out of a total of 732.7 contracted man-years for medical specialists, 459.4 man-years got subsidy in class 3. The distribution among subsidy rates remained stable.
