Thirty-one per cent of the population used tobacco in 2015, with 13 per cent smoking daily. The decline in daily smoking has been significant. The decline in the overall use of tobacco is less due to a simultaneous increase in daily snuff use.
Finnmark has the highest proportion of smokers
Finnmark has the most smokers. In the period 2012 to 2015, 19 per cent smoked daily in this region, and 9 per cent smoked occasionally. There are also many smokers in Østfold, Hedmark, Telemark and Rogaland. Oslo has the fewest smokers. In this region, 11 per cent said they smoked daily. Older people (45-74 years) are the most frequent smokers in most regions but the young smoke the most in Telemark and Finnmark.
Increased use of snuff in all regions
The use of snuff is increasing in all regions, and people in Sør-Trøndelag, Nord-Trøndelag and Nordland smoke the most.
From 2014, Statistics Norway has decided to estimate weights to adjust for possible biases introduced by non-response. Using weights will affect the numbers somewhat, but the trend we have seen over many years will remain unchanged, even with weighted figures.
Examples of weighted and unweighted figures for two years is available in About the statistics.
