Record level of public health nurses

The personnel resources in health centre services and school health services have never been higher. The growth is mainly due to an increase in the number of public health nurses, whereas the number of physicians and physiotherapists has declined.

For municipal health services as a whole, the increase in physician man-years continues. From 2005 to 2006, the number of physiotherapist man-years also increased.

More physicians and physiotherapists

The increase in physician man-years continues. In 2006, the number of physician man-years was 4 281, an increase of close to 60 man-years from 2005. Three out of four physicians are physicians with agreement. The rest are physicians with regular pay, mandatory physicians and private physicians without agreement.

The total number of physiotherapists in municipal health services in 2006 was 4 205, an increase of 1.4 per cent from 2005. This amounts to 9 man-years per 10 000 inhabitants on average. However, the physiotherapist coverage varies from municipality to municipality. The most central municipalities have a lower coverage than rural municipalities.

Personnel growth in health centre services and school health services

The personnel resources in municipal health centre services and school health services were at the highest level ever recorded in 2006, with 3 271 man-years. Nearly 2 000 man-years were provided by public health nurses, an increase of almost 100 man-years from 2005. The growth can be related to a governmental reform to improve psychiatric health services. At the same time, however, the number of physician and physiotherapist man-years in health centre services and school health services has continued to fall.
