More resources in municipal health services

There has been a growth in man-years and coverage rates for physicians, physiotherapists and public health nurses from 2000 to 2001. Measured as man-years, the number of physicians has the highest growth.

In 2001, a total of 3 859 man-years worked as medical doctors in the municipal health service, excluding institutions for the aged and disabled. This was an increase of 280 man-years from 2000. Measured as the number of man-years per inhabitant, the smallest and least central municipalities have the best access to services from physicians.

In 2001 physicians worked 249 man-years in institutions for the elderly and disabled. This counts for about six per cent of the total labour input of doctors in the municipal health services. The proportion has remained stable in recent years.

Increase in the number of physiotherapists

In 2001, physiotherapists worked 3 743 man-years in the municipal health service, excluding care for the old and disabled people. This was an increase of 130 man-years compared with the previous year.

In 2001, 368 of all physiotherapy man-years in the municipal health service were assigned to institutions for the elderly and disabled.

Increase in the number of man-years by health visitors

From 2000 to 2001 number of man-years by health visitors increased from 1 725 to 1 807. At the same time the figures show a small reduction in the number of man-years of midwives in the municipal health services. By the end of 2001 the midwives worked 278 man-years.

Measured as the number of man-years per inhabitant, the least central municipalities have the best access to services from these occupational groups. This is particularly true for midwives. The least central municipalities have about four times as many man-years per 10 000 new-borns as the most central municipalities.

Expenditures in the municipal health service

The municipal health service counts for 4,3 per cent of the municipalities total net expenditures. Within the net expenditures used on municipal health service diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation counts for 69 per cent.
