More physicians and physiotherapists

There has been a growth in man-years and coverage rates for physicians, physiotherapists and public health nurses from 2000 to 2001. Measured as man-years, the number of physicians has the increased most.

In 2001, a total of 3 860 man-years worked as doctors in the municipal health service, excluding care for the old and disabled. This was an increase of 280 man-years from 2000.

In 2001 physicians worked 253 man-years in institutions for the elderly and disabled. This accounts for about six per cent of the total labour input of doctors in the municipal health services. The proportion has remained stable in recent years.

Increase in number of physiotherapists

In 2001, physiotherapists worked 3 745 man-years in the municipal health service, excluding care for the old and disabled people, an increase of 131 man-years compared with the previous year.

In 2001, 365 of all physiotherapy man-years in the municipal health service were assigned to institutions for the elderly and disabled.

Increase in number of vacant midwives positions

From 2000 to 2001 the figures show a slight reduction in number of man-years of midwives in the municipal health services. By the end of 2001 the midwives worked 279 man-years. Corresponding, the vacant midwives positions show an increase from 2000 to 2001. At the same time, the number of man-years by health visitors increased from 1 725 to 1 801 in 2001.

Measured as the number of man-years per inhabitant, the least central municipalities have the best access to services from these occupational groups. This is particularly true for midwives, in which the least central municipalities have about four times as many man-years per 10 000 new-borns as the most central municipalities.

Introduction to KOSTRA

For the first time all municipalities deliver the information by an electronic questionnaire under KOSTRA. This means that 218 municipalities use KOSTRA as an information interchange system for the first time.
