More abortions among teenagers

In 2000, 14 635 abortions were performed. This is 356 more than last year. The increase was the highest in the youngest age groups. Among 15-19 year-olds the rate was 20 abortions per 1 000 women. A higher number has not been seen since 1990. NB: Some errors have been found in table 4, which is now corrected.

Induced abortions per 1000 women, by age. 2000

Although the number of abortions per 1 000 women was higher in 2000 than in the second half of the 1990s, the rate is still lower than in the 1980s.

In 2000, 15 892 petitions were made for abortions. Of these, 14 635 resulted in an abortion. There were 15 262 petitions made before the 12th week of pregnancy, while 630 were submitted after the 12th week. This is 12 fewer than in 1999, i.e. 1.9 per cent fewer committee-deliberated petitions. Of the 630 petitions deliberated by committees, 530 were granted and 73 denied. In relation to the number of applications, there were 0.5 per cent fewer rejections in 2000 compared with 1999. Seven per cent of the committee-deliberated petitions lacked a decision because the woman did not meet with the committee or for other reasons. Of the 530 applications that were granted, 513 were performed after the 12th week of pregnancy.

Most abortions among 20-24 year olds

When age groups are compared, women in their twenties have the highest abortion rate. Of those having an abortion performed at this age, nearly 26 per cent go to school or study. In the age group 20-24 years there were 28 abortions per 1 000 women in 2000 compared with 26.5 the year before. The abortion rate for this age group increased in the latter half of the 1990s and is now at the level of the abortion rate at the beginning of the 1990s. Abortions among teenagers show an increase in 2000 compared with 1999. There was a total of 20 abortions per 1 000 teenagers (15-19 years) after the number stayed at 18-19 throughout the 1990s.

Most abortions in Finnmark

Finnmark has now surpassed Oslo with respect to the number of induced abortions per 1 000 women aged 15-49 years. In 2000 Finnmark had 20.2 abortions per 1 000 women, while Oslo had 19.6. The fewest abortions per 1 000 women were performed in Sogn og Fjordane and Aust-Agder.
