The production in Norwegian manufacturing went up by 3.6 per cent from 2012 to 2013, according to calendar-adjusted figures . This was related to the significant increase in the production of ships, boats and oil platforms, machinery and equipment, and repair and installation of machinery in the first half-year of 2013. There was a small decline in the production of wood and wood products, basic chemicals and basic metals from 2012 to 2013.

Three-month change: a small decline in production in the fourth quarter of 2013

The changes in Norwegian manufacturing from the third to the fourth quarter are related to the record high production that was registered in the third quarter. The production of non-ferrous metals had a growth of 4.6 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter, according to seasonally-adjusted figures . This was related to a certain improvement in international demand during 2013. On the other hand, maintenance and operational difficulties among some producers contributed to a drop in basic chemicals by 4.9 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2013. The production of paper and paper products experienced a distinct downturn in production due to the closure of businesses in Norway.

There was also a decline of 1.6 per cent in food and food products in the last quarter of 2013. This was related to a lower production of fish and fish products together with feed products from the third to the fourth quarter of 2013.

Monthly change: growth in ships, boats and oil platforms in December 2013

There was a growth of 2.0 per cent in ships, boats and oil platforms from November to December 2013, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Together with the growth in machinery and equipment, and repair and installation of machinery, this contributed to a clear upturn in Norwegian manufacturing in December. Food and food products also had a small growth in production from November to December 2013.

Twelve-month change: stronger growth in the euro area than in Norway in November 2013

Production in Norwegian manufacturing went up by 1.7 per cent from November 2012 to November 2013, according to calendar-adjusted figures. Statistics from Eurostat show that production in the manufacturing industries in the euro area increased by 3.4 per cent in the same period.

Three-month change: drop in total industrial production (PII) in the fourth quarter of 2013

The overall production index (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply decreased by 3.2 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter of 2013, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. All the main sections in the index of industrial production had a decrease in this period. The changes in total industrial production (PII) were particularly related to a reduction in the extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas in this period. The extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas decreased by 3.8 and 6.0 per cent respectively from the third to the fourth quarter of 2013.

However, according to seasonally-adjusted figures, there was a certain increase in extraction of natural gas from November to December 2013. There was also reduced activity on some fields due to maintenance work in December 2013, according to The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Production within Norwegian electricity supply decreased by 4.6 per cent from the third to the fourth quarter, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Annual change: downturn in total industrial production (PII) in 2013

In the annual change from 2012 to 2013, the overall production index (PII) decreased by 4.9 per cent, according to calendar-adjusted figures. The production was lower in 2013 than in 2012 for all other main sections than in manufacturing.

Production in manufacturing for November 2013 is adjusted down slightlyOpen and readClose

New information from the Norwegian food industry has made it necessary to re-calculate the index of industrial production for November 2013. This has resulted in a downward adjustment of the figures for food and food products and consequently in a minor reduction in the index for the total production in manufacturing. There are no other changes in the index of industrial production for November 2013.
