Still growth in manufacturing

Production in manufacturing went up by 1.9 per cent from September to November 2011 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. There are differences between the industries within manufacturing.

Industries such as machinery and equipment, and ships, boats and oil platforms had an increase in production. The growth in these industries can be related to the record high investments made in the Norwegian petroleum sector in 2011 (see Investment statistics, 4th quarter 2011 ). On the other hand, other parts of Norwegian industry saw a decrease in production due to a decline in demand from abroad. This applies to, for instance, industries such as basic chemicals and non-ferrous metals. For other industries such as food products there were only minor changes from September to November 2011 compared with the previous three-month period.

Interpretation of seasonally-adjusted figures

In order to facilitate the interpretation of the short-term development, the index of production publishes three-month moving averages of the seasonally-adjusted figures. We normally compare the latest non-overlapping three-month periods, for instance September to November 2011 compared with June to August 2011. Seasonally-adjusted monthly changes must be interpreted with caution.
