Decrease in manufacturing

Production in manufacturing decreased by 1.7 per cent from June to August 2011 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Industries like food products, wood and wood products, basic chemicals together with basic metals had a downturn in production. The decrease in basic chemicals can partly be explained by a decline in the solar cell industry. On the other hand, paper and paper products, machinery and equipment, and transport equipment n.e.c had an increase in production compared with the previous three-month period.

Interpretation of seasonally-adjusted figures

In order to facilitate the interpretation of the short-term development, the index of production publishes three-month moving averages of the seasonally-adjusted figures. We normally compare the latest non-overlapping three-month periods, for instance June to August 2011 compared with March to May 2011. Seasonally-adjusted monthly changes must be interpreted with caution.
