Slight increase in production

Production in manufacturing increased by 0.4 per cent from November 2010 to January 2011 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

Production in refined petroleum chemicals and pharmaceuticals increased by 1.6 per cent, while computer and electrical equipment went up by 4.4 per cent. Output in fabricated metal products and machinery and equipment increased by 0.8 and 2.0 per cent respectively. This is connected to improvements in new and unfilled orders in the 4th quarter of 2010 (see statistics on new orders ).

Output in food products decreased by 1.3 per cent from November 2010 to January 2011 compared with the previous three-month period. Production in ships, boats and oil platforms went down by 1.9 per cent, while output in wood and wood products decreased by 5.5 per cent.

From January 2010 to January 2011

Output in manufacturing went up by 3.3 per cent from January 2010 to January 2011, according to working-day adjusted figures. Output in refined petroleum chemicals and pharmaceuticals and rubber, plastic and mineral products increased by 15.0 and 15.1 per cent respectively. There was also a 10.5 per cent growth in computer and electrical equipment. Production in wood and wood products, printing and reproduction as well as in fabricated metal products saw a decline during this period.

From December 2010 to January 2011

Output in Norwegian manufacturing increased by 0.6 per cent from December 2010 to January 2011, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Output in machinery and equipment and basic chemicals went up by 2.9 and 2.0 per cent respectively, while there was a 1.3 per cent growth in computer and electrical equipment. Output in wood and wood products and ships, boats and oil platforms went down by 9.1 and 3.6 per cent during this period.

Norway and the euro area

There was a 2.1 per cent increase in Norwegian manufacturing output from December 2010 to December 2011, according to working-day adjusted figures. Industrial production in the euro area increased by 8.6 per cent in the same period, according to figures published by Eurostat .

From manufacturing to extraction services

From January 2011 several enterprises have been reclassified from manufacturing to service activities in the central register of establishments and enterprises. As a result, these establishments have been moved from manufacturing to extraction and related services in the industrial index of production. These changes have also been incorporated in the basis for new weights from 2011 . Read more about the changes in the annual statistics for oil and gas activity .

Change in method of measurement

From January 2011 the method of measurement used for the textiles, wearing apparel and leather industry is changed from physical quantity of output to hours worked. New weights

The basis for weights used in the index of 2011 is the structural business statistics from 2009, which is projected with monthly statistics on turnover from 2010. From 2011 the calculation of the weights excludes auxiliary enterprises and financial holding companies. Read more about the use of weights in chapter 3.6 Estimation in “ About the index ”.
