Decline in manufacturing

Production in manufacturing dropped 2.5 per cent from May to July 2009 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures.

The output in refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceutical products went down by 8.6 per cent in this last period. Several parts of the engineering industries have also seen a drop in the output due to the lower demand and the decreasing stocks of unfilled orders in 2009 (See Business Tendency Survey and Statistics on new orders ). These changes have now affected the output in ships, boats and oil platforms, which saw a 3.7 per cent drop in output in May to July 2009 compared with the previous three months.

Improvements for some industries

Some industries have, however, seen improvements in output during the last period, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. Wood and wood products had a 9.2 per cent growth in the output compared with the previous three months. The production in food products was almost unchanged, while the output in non-ferrous metals saw a 1.9 per cent growth in this last period. Still, the non-ferrous metals industry has shut down old and inefficient production in response to the substantial lack of demand in 2009 due to the financial crisis.

From July 2008 to July 2009

Output in manufacturing decreased by 8.9 per cent from July 2008 to July 2009, according to working-day adjusted figures. Basic metals and paper and paper products have subsequently seen a significant drop in output, while the production in food products and machinery and equipment increased by 9.2 and 3.3 per cent respectively.

From June to July 2009

Output in Norwegian manufacturing increased by 0.5 per cent from June to July 2009, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. This was partly due to a growth in the output within food products together with ships, boats and oil platforms. These industries have seen a drop in the two previous months.

Norway and the Euro area

There was a 10.1 per cent decrease in Norwegian manufacturing output from June 2008 to June 2009, according to working-day adjusted figures. Industrial production in the Euro area dropped 17.8 per cent in the same period, according to figures published by Eurostat.
