Falling output in intermediate goods

Production in manufacturing fell by 0.9 per cent in August to October 2008 compared to May to July 2008, according to seasonally adjusted figures. This was due to a decline in production of intermediate goods.

Index of production for manufacturing January 1997-October 2008, 1995=100

Production of intermediate goods fell by 2.8 per cent during the same period. Production declined in all sectors, except basic chemicals. The drop in output can be partly explained by a fall in total building activity in Norway.

Output in capital goods increased by 0.3 per cent in August to October 2008 compared to May to July 2008. Oil platforms and machinery and equipment rose by 1.4 and 1.6 per cent respectively. Output in transport equipment fell by 3.0 per cent.

Production of consumer goods increased by 0.7 per cent in August to October 2008 compared to May to July 2008. Output in food products, beverages and tobacco rose by 3.8 per cent. Publishing, printing and reproduction fell by 1.1 per cent.

Slight decrease from August to September 2008

According to seasonally adjusted figures, manufacturing output fell by 0.4 per cent from September to October this year. Output in intermediate goods dropped by 2.7 per cent, while capital goods output fell by 0.1 per cent. Production of consumer goods increased by 0.5 per cent.

Growth since October 2007

The output in Norwegian manufacturing increased by 1.0 per cent from October last year to October this year, according to working-day adjusted figures. Capital goods output rose by 12.3 per cent during this period, while intermediate goods and consumer goods fell by 5.3 and 1.3 per cent respectively.

Norway and the Euro area

There was a 2.4 per cent growth in Norwegian manufacturing output from September 2007 to September 2008, according to working-day adjusted figures. Industrial production in the Euro area dropped by 2.7 per cent in the same period, according to figures published by Eurostat .
