Growth in intermediate goods

The output in manufacturing has increased by 1.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2006 compared with last quarter of 2005, according to seasonally adjusted figures. The manufacturing of intermediate goods increased the most.

The output in intermediate goods saw a 3.5 per cent improvement during this last period. Non-ferrous metals and basic chemicals have seen a growth in the output due to a better demand from abroad. Increased competition and weak markets still affects the output in other parts of basic metals and pulp, paper and paper products.

Demand affects the growth

The capital goods output experienced a 2.2 per cent growth in the first quarter of 2006 compared with the last quarter of 2005. The growth within oil platforms and modules and building and equipping of ships has continued. The demand from abroad has also contributed to the growth within the engineering industries.

The consumer goods output decreased by 1.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2006 compared with the previous quarter. Food products and furniture had a drop in the production, while publishing, printing and reproduction saw an increase in the output in this last period.

From February 2005 to February 2006 there was a 4.1 per cent growth in the Norwegian manufacturing output. The industrial production rose by 3.2 per cent in the euro-zone during the same period, according to figures from Eurostat .
