Broadly based increase in manufacturing

The output in manufacturing increased by 1.9 per cent in the period May to July 2005 compared with the previous three-month period, according to seasonally adjusted figures. All the main industrial groupings experienced growth, with the exception of energy goods.

The production of intermediate goods increased by 2.4 per cent. Basic chemicals and wood and wood products had a significant increase. For basic chemicals this was due to a steady demand from abroad and expanded production capacity. The solid increase in the construction of new buildings in Norway in 2005 contributed to the rise in output within wood and wood products.

Capital goods

The production of capital goods rose by 2.2 per cent in the May to July period compared with the previous three-month period. Both machinery and transport equipment experienced significant output growth, mainly due to the Norwegian building and fitting of equipment on ships for offshore activities, which have seen a considerable growth in 2005. Activities related to installations onshore and underwater solutions contributed to the production increase within oil platforms and modules.

Consumer goods

The production of consumer goods went up by 1.9 per cent from May to July this year compared with the previous three-month period. Food products and furniture and other manufacturing both increased, and a modest growth also took place within publishing, printing and reproduction.
