Slight decrease in manufacturing

The output in manufacturing has dropped by 0.9 per cent from November 2003 to January 2004 compared with the previous period, according to seasonally adjusted figures. This is related to a drop in the capital goods output.

Transport equipment has had the most significant drop. Weak domestic markets for capital goods have continued in this period. The output for oil platforms and modules have dropped 2.5 per cent because of a downturn in new orders received during the last year.

Consumer and intermediate goods

Intermediate goods output has increased by 0.5 per cent from November 2003 to January this year, compared with the previous three months period. Basic metals, rubber and plastic products and other non-metallic mineral products have contributed to these changes. Consumer goods output has also experienced a modest 0.3 per cent increase caused by a modest upturn in food products, beverages and tobacco.

Changes in computation

The adjustment for the length of month has been revised from January 2004. These changes will provide a better consistency within the published indexes. The new figures are available from 1986 to January 2004.The unadjusted figures are not changed.
