Modest increase in manufacturing

The manufacturing output showed an increase of 1.2 per cent in January 2001 compared with December last year, according to seasonally adjusted figures. During the last six months the manufacturing output nevertheless decreased by 1 per cent.

The output in food products increased from December to January, but even so the output in food products decreased by 1 per cent during the last six months. This is also true for some of the engineering industries. These changes are until now very moderate. During the last six months, the production of oil platforms and modules decreased by almost 5 per cent. Seasonally adjusted figures for non-ferrous metals showed a further 1 per cent increase from December to January and about a 2 per cent increase during the last six months. The intermediate goods industries have had a slightly better performance than the capital goods industries, but both industries have seen a seasonally adjusted decline during the last six months.

Weekly adjusted figures

The weekly adjusted figures for manufacturing showed about a 5 per cent decrease from January 2000 to January this year. These figures do not take into account the fact that the first of January in 2000 was on a Saturday while the first of January 2001 was on a Monday.

New aggregate: Refined petroleum products and the chemical industry

The publishing of separate figures for these two industries will cease from January 2001, and be replaced by an aggregate called refined petroleum products and chemicals. This is due to a confidentiality issue in the refinery industry.
