Modest increase in manufacturing

Manufacturing output increased by 0.5 per cent in the 3. quarter, when compared with the 2. quarter this year. Still the weekly adjusted figures showed a lower activity level in September than in the corresponding month last year.

There are large differences in growth rates among manufacturing sectors. The highest growth rates in September are found in traditional export industries like basic chemicals and paper and paper products compared with the same month last year. The production within intermediate sectors was high during the 3. quarter, contributing to a growth in the manufacturing total.

Capital goods

For sectors producing capital goods, the production level is still lower in September than in the same month last year, especially in the offshore-related sectors. However, some of the engineering sectors showed a slight increase in the third quarter when compared to the previous quarter of 2000.

Energy goods

The production of electricity, gas and steam supply was 25.2 per cent higher in September than in same month last year. Recently updated figures showed a reduction of 2 per cent in electricity production in August.
