Slight increase in manufacturing

Manufacturing output increased slightly in August 2000 when compared with July. Still the weekly-adjusted figures showed a lower activity in August than in the corresponding month last year.

The increase in manufacturing output can be explained partly by a higher activity level in some engineering sectors. The fabricated metal production also showed an increase in August this year compared to the same period last year. However, most of the manufacturing sectors showed a lower output compared to August 1999, and the output declined by 3.2 percent. The sectors contributing the most to this downturn are the manufacture of food products, beverages, tobacco, and the publishing and printing.

Energy goods

The total industrial output fell by 2.3 percent in August. It is mostly due to a reduction in oil and gas extraction production. In part of August there has been production stop in some oil fields. The electricity and gas production was substantially higher in August than the same month last year.
