Slow down in manufacturing

Weekly adjusted data from manufacturing showed a decrease by 1.3 per cent from January to April 2000 compared to the same period last year. The engineering industries saw a significant decline during this period.

The manufacturing output in April 2000 was about 4 per cent lower than in the same month of 1999. The fabricated metal, the machinery equipment and the transport equipment sector showed the most negative rate of growth. One factor that partly explains this change was the Easter holiday in April this year as opposed to last year when the Easter holiday was divided between March and April. Nevertheless those sectors had clear downward development when comparing figures from the first four months in 2000 with the corresponding period last year.

Energy goods

The overall index seasonally adjusted has been reduced from March to April 2000 due to a lower production of energy goods - especially gas. From January to April 2000, however, there has been an increased production of energy goods compared to the same period in 1999.
