The statistics for the annual sale of petroleum products, which were published on 4 April, were withdrawn due to errors. The total sale of petroleum products is revised upwards, but still shows an overall decline. The revision mainly affected the sale of auto diesel.

Small decrease in total sales of petroleum products

The overall inland sales of petroleum products ended at about 8.7 billion litres in 2015. This is a 152 million-litre (1.7 per cent) decrease from 2014. This is the fifth year in a row that total sales have fallen.

Figure 1. Sales of petroleum products. Final figures by product

Total sales of gasoline and auto diesel amounted to 4.17 billion litres in 2015; 23 million litres more than the previous year. The products combined made up 48 per cent of the total sales of petroleum products.

Sales of auto diesel continue to increase

From 2010 to 2015, sales of auto diesel have increased steadily each year. In 2015, sales ended at just below 3 billion litres; 92 million litres more than in 2014 (3.2 per cent). One litre of auto diesel costs on average NOK 12.23. This is NOK 0.88 less than the average price in 2014.

Fall in gasoline sales continues

In 2015, sales of gasoline ended at 1.18 billion litres. This represents a reduction of 69 million litres (5.5 per cent) from 2014. The price of a litre of 95 octane unleaded gasoline decreased by NOK 0.82 from 2014, and the average price was NOK 13.96 per litre in 2015.

Less use of marine gas oils, heavy fuel oils and heavy distillate

Marine gas oils accounted for about 17 per cent of the total sales of petroleum products, and sales ended at 1.5 billion litres in 2015. This is 36 million litres less than in 2014.

Sales of heavy fuel oils and heavy distillates ended in 2015 at 139 million litres, which is approximately 50 per cent lower compared to 2014.

Heavy fuel oils and heavy distillate are used as fuel for ships, and there has been a political call for a transition to alternative and more environmentally friendly fuels. International laws have been drawn up aimed at reducing the sulphur content and thus emissions in shipping.

Fuel oil and heating kerosene

Sales of light fuel oils ended at about 633 million litres in 2010. Five years later, sales more than halved, ending at 282 million litres in 2015.

47 million litres less jet kerosene

Sales of jet kerosene ended at about 1.1 billion litres in 2015. This is a decrease of 47 million litres from 2014. Sales of jet kerosene accounted for 13 per cent of the total sales of petroleum products.

A methodology change in the treatment of the products LNG and jet fuel has impacted domestic sales of these products in the period between 2009 and 2014. Also, a method change related to classifications has provided more sales to Wholesale fuels and related products. The total sale of petroleum products is only marginally affected by these changes. For 2014, new updated import figures have resulted in changes to several petroleum products in this year compared to figures published in March 2014.
