Index of orders in manufacturing (discontinued)Q4 1999

Statistics Norway has decided to stop the publication of the Index of orders in manufacturing from the first quarter of 2018. One reason for this was that the statistic previously was a part of Eurostat's regulation for short-term statistics, but this requirement was removed from the regulation in 2012. However, indicators for new orders and stock of orders are available in Business tendency survey for manufacturing, mining and quarrying.

Increased demand

During the last quarters the order-based industry has experienced a growth in new orders received. Based on the original series the index shows a 16 per cent increase during the last year and a 12 per cent increase between the 3rd and the 4th quarter. A slight improvement in domestic as well as in export markets contributes to the increase.

On the other hand - the unfilled orders have shown a decline over the past periods. The development is mainly due to a weak domestic market, which has fallen by 33 per cent compared with the 4th quarter 1998. The unfilled orders for exports have increased over the past two periods, and are to some extent counteracting the negative trend in the home market.

The industry of fabricated metal products, electrical and optical equipment and transport equipment has during the last period experienced a relatively strong demand from the domestic market. Although the unfilled orders have improved the somewhat, the level is still relatively low.
