Index of orders in manufacturing (discontinued)Q4 2008

Statistics Norway has decided to stop the publication of the Index of orders in manufacturing from the first quarter of 2018. One reason for this was that the statistic previously was a part of Eurostat's regulation for short-term statistics, but this requirement was removed from the regulation in 2012. However, indicators for new orders and stock of orders are available in Business tendency survey for manufacturing, mining and quarrying.

Wide decline in new orders

New orders received fell further in the fourth quarter of 2008. Weakened demand in the domestic and the export market contributed to this. Total stocks in industry were still at a high level within some of the industries.

New orders and unfilled orders. Unadjusted. 2005=100

Manufacturers working on new orders reported further weakened demand in the new orders received. New orders received were 31.1 per cent lower in the fourth quarter of 2008 than in the corresponding quarter of 2007. The generally weaker new orders received from all industries was the reason for this development. Total stocks were reduced by a more moderate 5.7 per cent in the same period. Effects of currency related to a higher US dollar currency contributed to limiting the decline somewhat.
