Increased domestic use of natural gas

Net domestic consumption of natural gas is increasing and came to 358 million Sm3 last year, equivalent to 3 950 GWh. The consumption has never been higher, and rose by more than 13 per cent from 2007.

Although net domestic consumption of natural gas is increasing, natural gas still only makes up a small proportion of total domestic use of energy. In 2008, natural gas only accounted for 1.7 per cent of the total net consumption of energy.

In addition to net domestic consumption, 7 175 GWh of natural gas was used for non-energy purposes in the manufacturing industries, 62 193 GWh was consumed by the energy sector and 625 GWh was converted into other energy carriers.

Natural gas can be transported in pipelines as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or as compressed natural gas (CNG).
