Increased consumption of district heating

The consumption of district heating in 2002 was 1 932 GWh - 6.4 per cent more than the former record high level in 2001. High investment figures indicate increased production and use of district heating in the years to come. In 2002 the use of district heating amounted to less than 1 per cent of the total net domestic use of energy.

The average annual growth of use of district heating has been 6.7 per cent the last 10 years. Services used more than 70 per cent of the total use of district heating last year.

More district heating enterprises

While the number of enterprises producing district heating has been stable between 21 and 23 since the eighties, the number of enterprises has increased to 29 in 2001 and 35 in 2002.

The gross production of hot water and steam was 2 438 GWh in 2002. Of this 66 GWh was delivered for production of electricity and 252 was heat not distributed. The net production of district heating in 2002 was 2 121 GWh. 189 GWh of this were lost in the distribution net and 1 932 GWh were delivered to consumers.

The net production of district heating in 2002 was twice as large as in the beginning of the nineties due to increased production from the existing producers and new producers.

In the production of district heating the use of oil increased and the use of electricity declined. This is mainly caused by a development in prices of oil and electricity favouring oil the last year.

Much more investments

The total investments in district heating have increased much the last two years. In 2000 the investments was NOK 236 million, in 2001 NOK 330 million, and in 2002 as much as NOK 620 million.

The price of district heating increased from 37 øre/kWh in 2001 to 38 øre/kWh in 2002, exclusive of value added tax.
