Solid output growth in manufacturing

Published:

Norwegian manufacturing output saw an increase of 1.7 per cent in the second quarter of 2019 compared to the first quarter, according to seasonally-adjusted figures. A high level of activity in petroleum-related manufacturing was among the contributors to the growth.

The index level for Norwegian manufacturing in the second quarter amounted to 119.8 (2005=100). The corresponding figure for the previous quarter was 117.8. The long-term trend shows steady growth since May 2018 (see figure 1).

Three-month change: continued growth in petroleum-related manufacturing

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output increased with 1.7 per cent in the second quarter, compared with the first quarter. There was especially strong activity within building of ships and oil platforms, with an output increase of 7.5 per cent. Furthermore, food products as well as the industry grouping computer and electrical equipment contributed positively to the growth.

Overall, petroleum-related manufacturing saw a clear increase of 4.8 per cent this quarter (see figure 2). The growth is, among other factors, related to an increase in the investment activity in the oil and gas sector over the last year. At the same time, several of the traditionally petroleum-related manufacturing businesses saw an increase in output directed at other market segments than oil and gas.

Monthly change: output decline from May to June

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, manufacturing output saw a decline of 1 per cent from May to June 2019. The industry grouping refined petroleum, chemicals and pharmaceutical products, together with food products, contributed most to the decline.

Output increase in the Euro area and in Norway in May 2019

Estimated figures from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office, indicate that manufacturing output in the Euro area had an increase of 0.9 per cent from April to May 2019. In the same period, Norwegian manufacturing output increased marginally by 0.3 per cent.

Sweden had a decrease in output by 0.6 per cent in the same period, while Denmark saw a strong increase of 3.5 per cent.

Three-month change: clear decline in extraction of crude petroleum

According to seasonally-adjusted figures, the total production index (PII) covering extraction, mining, manufacturing and electricity supply saw a fall of 1.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2019 compared with the first quarter. Extraction of crude petroleum decreased strongly by 10.2 per cent, while extraction of natural gas increased by 2.9 per cent. For more details about oil and gas extraction for June 2019, see the press release from The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.

Support activities for petroleum extraction had an output increase equivalent to 1.1 per cent in the second quarter compared with the previous quarter.

On the other hand, mining and quarrying saw a clear production fall of 10 per cent in the same period, while output within Norwegian electricity supply went down with 1 per cent.

1 The index value for period m is the average of period m, m-1 and m-2.
