Large decline for manufacturing

2016 was a very tough year for Norwegian manufacturing, mining and quarrying. Most oil-related industries experienced a drop in value added and in total it fell by 6.1 per cent from 2015 to 2016.

The value added at factor prices fell for large parts of Norwegian manufacturing. It affected petroleum-related manufacturing the hardest. At the same time basic metals and the grouping refined petroleum products, chemicals and pharmaceutical products contributed to at rise in gross investments  by 24 per cent for manufacturing, mining and quarrying.

Downturn in petroleum-related manufacturing

Machinery and equipment had a drop in value added by 36.4 per cent compared to the year before. Building of ships and platforms also had a bad year where value added fell by 11.6 per cent from the year before. Other petroleum-related manufacturing also had a tough year.

Basic metals and the grouping refined petroleum products, chemicals and pharmaceutical products both experienced a decrease in value added. Still they started large investment projects, and gross investments rose by 60.6 per cent for the former and 57.8 per cent for the latter.

Food and beverages still up

The grouping manufacture of food products, beverages and tobacco was still the largest industry and had a growth in value added by 1.3 billion NOK, up 3.3 per cent from the year before.

Number of employees dropped by 10 000

Just under 230 000 people where employed in manufacturing, mining and quarrying in 2016. This is the lowest figure for employment the last 10 years, and the petroleum-related manufacturing industries fell the most.

Value added in Rogaland larger than Hordaland

Value added in the county of Hordaland fell by 13.6 per cent and in Rogaland it fell by 11.7 per cent, making the latter the county with highest value added in 2016.
