Many small local kind-of-activity units in construction

In 2013, 54 982 local kind-of-activity units were registered in construction. This is an increase of 2.5 per cent from 2012. Employment was a total of 219 598 persons. Of the local kind-of-activity units, 49 988 had between 0 and 9 employees.

Highest employment in the smallest local kind-of-activity units

In 2013, there were 54 982 local kind-of-activity units in Norway with an industry classification associated with construction. The majority of these local kind-of-activity units have few employees. In 2013 for example, 90.5 per cent of the registered local kind-of-activity units had 9 or fewer employees. Only 0.9 per cent had more than 50 employees and 0.1 per cent had more than 250 employees. The total employment in construction was 219 598 persons. Of these, 34.5 per cent, equivalent to 77 596 persons, were employed in local kind-of-activity units with between 0 and 9 employees.

Among the local kind-of-activity units in construction, both employment and turnover increased in 2013, reaching a record level, while the growth was weaker than in previous years. The industry experienced high growth following the financial crisis. For instance, turnover in the period 2010-2011 grew by 14.4 per cent and by 10.5 per cent from 2011 to 2012. From 2012 to 2013, the growth in turnover was reduced to 5.4 per cent. While employment increased by 4.8 per cent from 2011 to 2012, the growth was weaker in 2013 and increased by 3.9 per cent. The number of local kind-of-activity units increased from 2007 to 2013 by just over 8 800 units. From 2011 to 2012, the number of local kind-of-activity units increased by 4.1 per cent. The corresponding increase from 2012 to 2013 was 2.5 per cent.

Highest growth in civil engineering

The growth in total turnover among the local kind-of-activity units in construction saw a decline from 2012 to 2013. This is due to weaker growth in “construction of buildings” and "specialised construction activities", which grew by 3.8 per cent and 5.8 per cent respectively in 2013. In contrast, the turnover in “civil engineering” grew by 11.4 per cent in 2013.

Highest turnover in Oslo - most local kind-of-activity units in Akershus

The local kind-of-activity units in Oslo had a turnover of NOK 85.9 billion in 2013. This corresponds to 19.8 per cent of the total turnover in construction. This is despite the fact that only 9.6 per cent of all local kind-of-activity units are registered in this county. The county with the highest number of local kind-of-activity units was Akershus with 6 226 registered units, which is 11.3 per cent of the total. Fewest local kind of activity units were found in Finnmark, with 673.
