Number of municipal dwellings still increasing

The number of municipal dwellings increased by about 1 000 from 2007 to 2008. From 2006 to 2007, the number increased by about 2 000. The increase comes after a period of stagnation between 2004 and 2006, and a tendency towards a decrease in the number of municipal dwellings.

There are however some municipalities where the number of municipal dwellings decreased from 2007 to 2008. The reasons for the decreases vary. Some municipalities are selling old and low-functional buildings. They have new buildings under construction but these were not ready for habitation at the time of counting. Other municipalities rebuild existing houses and get fewer but larger houses out of several smaller units.

In total, there were about 97 000 municipal disposed dwellings as per December 2008. This gives around 20 municipal dwellings per 1 000 inhabitants.
