Little change in building starts

Seasonally-adjusted figures for building start permits show a 2 per cent increase in dwelling permits from January to February.

The long-term trend shows good growth in the number of building permits since October 2014, with a minor decrease in the last four months, from a record high level.

Decrease in industry sector

Seasonally-adjusted figures show a 2 per cent decrease in building start permits for “other than dwellings” from January to February. The long-term trend shows an increase in utility floor space since April 2015, with a decrease in the last seven months.

Dwelling permits up 18 per cent last 12 months

A total of 37 200 new dwellings have been given building start permits in the last 12 months. This is an increase of 18 per cent compared with the previous 12-month period. 

Building start permits have been given for 5.8 million square metres of utility floor space for the category “other than dwellings” in the last 12 months. This is 12 per cent more than the previous 12-month period.

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
