Growth in building activity

Preliminary figures show an increase in building activity. Figures for October this year are lower than last year, but the trend is still going upwards.

A total of 24 980 new dwellings have been given building starts hitherto in 2012. This is over 1 600, or 7 per cent, more than the same period last year.

Figures for the industrial sector show growth in building activity. Hitherto this year, 4.7 million square metres of utility floor space were started for other than residential buildings. This is an increase of 3.9 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Registered building permissions

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
