Higher level of building activity

In the fourth quarter of 2012, building was started on 7 802 dwellings, with a total 1 058 000 square metres of utility floor space. New dwellings increased by almost 6 per cent compared with the fourth quarter of 2011.

The rise in house building is unequally distributed by building types. Detached houses are at about the same level as the year before, while houses with two dwellings and row houses saw an increase of 2 189 new dwellings. It is, however, multi-dwelling houses that dominate in absolute figures, with 3 087 new dwellings.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, building was started on 875 000 square metres of utility floor space within the industrial sector. This is a decrease of a good 22 per cent. The level of building activity is especially low within office buildings.

Registered building permissionsOpen and readClose

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
