Strong growth in building activity

Preliminary figures show a strong increase in building activity. Figures for building starts for the period June-September are the highest since 1987.

Number of dwellings started. Seasonally adjusted and trend. January 2000-September 2012

Started non-residential utility floor space. Seasonally adjusted and trend. January 2000-September 2012

A total of 22 339 new dwellings have been given building starts hitherto in 2012. This is almost 2 000, or 10 per cent, more than the same period last year. Building activity seems to have increased after a moderate start earlier this year.

Growth in industrial sector

Figures for the industrial sector show growth in building activity. In June-September this year, 2.1 million square metres of utility floor space were started for other than residential buildings. This is an increase of 31 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Registered building permissions

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
