Increasing building activity

Preliminary figures show that building activity is still going up. Figures for the period May-August are the highest since 2004.

Number of dwellings started. Seasonally adjusted and trend. January 2000-August 2012

Started non-residential utility floor space. Seasonally adjusted and trend. January 2000-August 2012

A total of 10 172 new dwellings were given building starts during May-August 2012. This is 2 353 more than the same period last year. Building activity seems to have increased after a moderate start earlier this year.

Small changes in industrial sector

Figures for the industrial sector show modest changes. In May-August this year, almost 1.8 million square metres of utility floor space were started up for other than residential buildings. This is slightly higher than average for the period May-August over the last 5 years.

Registered building permissions

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
