High building activity

Preliminary figures show that building activity is going up. Figures for the period May-July have not been so high since 2004.

Number of dwellings started. Seasonally adjusted and trend. January 2000-July 2012

Started non-residential utility floor space. Seasonally adjusted and trend. January 2000-July 2012

A total of 7 460 new dwellings were given building starts during May-July 2012. This is 1 693 more than the same period last year. Building activity seems to have increased after a moderate start earlier this year.

Small changes in industrial sector

Figures for the industrial sector show modest changes. In May-July this year more than 1.2 million square metres of utility floor space was started up for other than residential buildings. This is about the average for the period May-July over the last 5 years.

Registered building permissions

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
