Decrease in building activity

In the first quarter of 2012, building was started on 6 791 dwellings with 877 000 square metres of utility floor space for dwellings. New dwellings decreased by 13.1 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2011. Utility floor space for residential buildings and other than residential decreased by 13.1 and 19.5 per cent respectively.

Started utility floor space for industrial buildings and holiday houses. 1 000 square metre. 1st quarter 2000 to 1st quarter 2012

Building work started. Number of dwellings total and dwellings in multi-dwelling building. 1st quarter 2000 to 1st quarter 2012

The fall in housebuilding is greatest for flats, which went down by 32 per cent compared with the same period in the previous year. Statistics for new dwellings by building type show a decrease in all groups except for residence for communities, which is mainly due to the building of student dormitories.

Decrease in industrial sector

In the first quarter of 2012, building was started on 948 000 square metres of utility floor space within the industrial sector. This is a decrease of 18.9 per cent. Building activity is especially low within office and commercial buildings, with a decrease of 165 000 square metres.

Overall, building starts decreased by 444 000 square metres.

Registered building permissions

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
