Further increase in multi-dwellings
In the second quarter of 2011, building was started on 6 401 dwellings, with 936 000 m2 of utility floor space for dwellings. New dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings increased by 142 per cent compared with the second quarter of 2010.
Forty-one per cent of all new dwellings were started in multi-dwelling buildings, but these account for only 31 per cent of started utility floor space.
Only three in ten dwellings are built in detached houses, and account for 46 per cent of started utility floor space. Forty-eight per cent more dwellings were started compared with the second quarter of 2010.
Decrease in industrial sector
In the second quarter of 2011, building was 812 000 square metres compared with the same period last year. This is a decrease of 381 000 square metres, or 32 per cent. Construction of office buildings accounts for most of the decrease within the industrial sector.

Registered building permissions
Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
