Strong increase in multi-dwellings
In the first quarter of 2011, building was started on 7 379 dwellings with 984 000 m2 of utility floor space for dwellings. Almost half of all new dwellings were started in multi-dwelling buildings.
Forty-six per cent of all new dwellings were started in multi-dwelling buildings, but account for only 35 per cent of started utility floor space. More than half of all blocks of flats were started in Oslo and Akershus county.
Every fourth dwelling is built in detached houses, and accounts for 41 per cent of started utility floor space. Thirty-four per cent more dwellings were started compared with the first quarter of 2010.
Still high activity in industrial sector
In the first quarter of 2011, building was started for 1 147 000 square metres of utility floor space in the industrial sector. This is an increase of 80 000 square metres compared with the same period last year. Construction of office buildings accounts for most of the increase within the industrial sector.
Largest cities dominate
It is the largest cities that dominate in the building activity. In Oslo municipality more building starts were made, measured in utility floor space, than in the five northernmost counties put together. The three most populated municipalities; Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim, account for more than one quarter of the building activity.
More figures are available in Statbank .
Registered building permissions
Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.
