Large increase in new dwellings

Preliminary figures show a marked increase in new dwellings in January 2011, compared with January 2010. The number of new dwellings increased by 28 per cent in January, while total utility floor space is at the same level as last year.

A total of 2 964 new dwellings were given building starts in January; an increase of 639 dwellings compared with January 2010.

Decrease in industrial sector

A total of 413 100 square metres of utility floor space for industrial buildings were started. This is 22 per cent less compared with the same period in 2010. Larger fluctuations are however more common in monthly figures for building activity in the industrial sector.

Small changes in total

Building start of utility floor space decreased by 0.6 per cent. An increase of 103 300 square metres of utility floor space for dwellings was offset by a similar decrease of 108 900 for other than dwellings.

Registered building permissions

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permits are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permit does not always mean that construction will be started at once. Especially in low conjunctures it might be that construction projects are not realised, or may be postponed after a building permit has been granted. When the building activity trend turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this could affect the interpretation of the statistics.

Lack in registration

Buildings registered without the need for application, after the introduction of the data register Matrikkelen, have to varying degrees been registered with all necessary information. This in turn has led to an underestimation of buildings in the agricultural sector in particular. A total of 8 500 buildings have been registered as notifiable matters without information on utility floor space.

In this release new figures are published for the period 2008-2010.
