Increase in building activity continues

So far in 2010, 16 862 dwellings have been started. This is 4.3 per cent more than the same period in the lowest year 2009.

Building statistics are showing an increasing trend within both the residential and industrial sectors. Registered utility floor space for industrial and public sector purposes increased by 23 per cent compared with the same period in 2009.

Building was started on a total of 6.2 million square metres of utility floor space in the first nine months of 2010. This is an increase of over 14 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Registered building permissions

Figures for buildings in the building statistics rely on dates for when permissions are registered by the municipality in the data register (Matrikkelen). A building permission does not always imply that construction will be started at once. Construction projects may not be realised, particularly during an economic downturn, or may be postponed after building permission has been granted. When the trend for building activity turns from a low to a high level, and vice versa, this may affect the interpretation of the statistics.

Lack in registration

Buildings registered without a need for application after the introduction of the data register Matrikkelen in 2009 have been registered with the necessary information to varying degrees. This in turn has led to an underestimation of buildings in the agricultural sector in particular. Revised figures are planned for the publishing of figures for December 2010.
