Large increase in industrial sector

In the second quarter of 2010, building was started on more than a million square metres of utility floor space for other than dwellings in the industrial sector. This is the highest figure for a second quarter in the last 10 years. Building was started on 676 000 m2 of utility floor space for dwellings; an increase of 15 per cent.

Utility floor space within the industrial sector increased by 61 per cent. The increase in the industrial sector is mainly due to an increase in the building of offices.

Increase in office buildings

In the second quarter of 2010, building was started for 452 000 m2 of utility floor space in xxx buildings. This is an increase of 249 000 m2 compared with the same period in 2009; an increase of 123 per cent. The second quarter of 2009 did however have quite a few building starts for industrial buildings in general.

Increase in all types of industrial buildings

After office buildings, factory buildings had the largest increase, both in area and percentage. Within factory buildings, building was started on 230 000 m2; an increase of 30 per cent.

More multi-dwelling buildings

Building starts on utility floor space for dwellings increased by 12 per cent, from a low level of 604 000 m2 in the second quarter last year, to 679 000 m2 this year. The largest increase has been within multi-dwelling buildings, with an increase of 244 dwellings or 29 per cent.
