Small decrease in new dwellings

In the first quarter of 2010, building was started on 688 000 m2 of utility floor space for dwellings and 1 180 000 m2 for non-dwellings. This is a decrease of 1.6 and 9.6 per cent respectively compared with the same period in 2009.

The decline within non-dwellings is mainly due to a decrease within the industrial sector and business sector. The industrial sector and business sector fell by 61 000 and 134 000 square metres of utility floor space respectively.

Increase in primary sector

In the first quarter of 2010, building was started for 126 000 square metres of utility floor space in agricultural and fishery buildings. This is an increase of 65 000 square metres compared with the same period in 2009, but at the same level as the first quarter of 2008.

Holiday houses down

Building starts for utility floor space in holiday houses fell by 21 per cent, or 35 000 square metres of utility floor space. We need to go back to the first quarter of 2005 to find lower figures for holiday houses. The building activity within the leisure sector has however been particularly high for the last five years.
