House-building down 40 per cent from top

In the first three quarters of 2009 the number of dwellings started is 40 per cent lower than the top level in 2006 and 2007. The house-building activity is approaching the bottom level from the early nineties, when the number of dwelling starts was under 20 000 yearly.

During the first nine months of 2009, a total of 2 949 dwellings in blocks were started; a 75 per cent decrease compared with about 11 000 starts in the same period in 2006 and 2007. Also, the number of dwelling starts in other multi-dwelling houses is falling strongly, while the number of new detached houses has been stable on a low level since the beginning of this millennium.

The floor space started in the 3rd quarter shows a fall of 60 per cent over the year and indicates an increasing negative trend.
