Bottom record for new dwellings

A total of 4 340 dwelling starts were recorded in the second quarter this year; the same level as the second quarter of 2000. The quarterly figures for utility floor space for other than dwelling are the lowest registered since the second quarter of 2003.

Started utility floor space of kindergartens. Square metre. 2000-2009

Started utility floor space of nursing homes. Square metre. 2000-2009

For the country as a whole, a total of 4 340 new dwellings have been started, with a total utility floor space of 604 000 square metres. About every tenth new dwelling started is a single-room dwelling, and half of the dwellings started were detached houses.

Central areas pulled down

A total of 64 per cent of the dwellings were started in the most central municipalities. This is however less than what has ever been registered since the first quarter of 2000. The recession has been most dominant in the larger city areas. The central areas have on average had 71 per cent of the dwelling starts in the period from the first quarter of 2000 to the third quarter of 2009, with a peak at 78 per cent in the second quarter of 2006.

Peripheral municipalities are steady

Almost half (201) of the Norwegian municipalities are classified as less or least central municipalities. In these municipalities there have been small changes in dwelling starts since the first quarter of 2000. The less and least central municipalities have had a relative increase in dwelling starts due to the large decline in dwelling starts in the most central municipalities. Building activity in the smallest municipalities shows relatively large seasonal fluctuations, but seems to be steady over a longer period.

More kindergartens and fewer nursing homes

In the last half year, 64 400 square metres of utility floor space has been started for kindergartens. This is the same level as the average for the period after summer 2005, which is 63 000 square metres. The average for the four-year period before summer 2005 was however a mere 30 000 square metres.

A total of 11 600 square metres of utility floor space was registered for nursing homes in the first half of 2009. This is at the same level as the second half of 2008, which is the lowest registered activity since 2000.
